Synopsis : The first film of Netflix based on Hasidic Community. It portrays image of a bird who flees from his cage and turns her life into a magical one. It is a Netflix’s first Yiddish series which is a moving tale of faith, feminism and a fight for freedom, bolstered by an astonishing lead performance. A new custom, a new style and a new language everything is unique in its own way.
The First Yiddish Film on Netflix based on Deborah Feldman’s 2012 autobiography Unorthodox : The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots.
In the first episode itself, ‘Esty’ Shapiro (portrayed intelligently by Shira Haas) left Brooklyn and went to Berlin for living a independent life. She is from the highest orthodox community i.e. Satmar Hasidic Community which stated that the community have to be religious and the women specially have no right to education and they have only one work of making their husbands feel. ‘like a king’. But it represented one significance fact the mother-in-law of everywhere are same as Esty’s mother-in-law stated to his son that Esty is not fit for his son. Esty does not birth to a child in the one year of his marriage. And the reason behind this if you want to know, you have to watch this.
It is well noted that in this age of modern days, every girl knows at the early age like 13 or 14, because they are educated that how to reproduce a child. But in the second episode, a tutor is put for Esty at the age of 19 that how to reproduce the child. In a city like New York, who believed that a community is existed whose woman are unlikely uneducated at this stage. This is unbelievable but the unbelievable word has no worth in front of the word Orthodox.
The movie started from the flee of Esty. The moments of Nazi Concentration talks, Esty’s Lake moments, the struggles of Esty for scholarship for Music Schools, etc..etc..pushed you to watch this film and then you know that you are far away from this community.
Meanwhile, if you are getting bored of your life, then this movie is for you. You know that there are many struggles but without money, without education, without family support, without any communication channel, without any link, someone is exist in this world who want to change her life to the beautiful life as Esty done in her life.
